Seasons of Depression

Day 29 of 31 days of depression.

The bible is clear that we will go through seasons in life. For some of us, that means seasons of depression. Sometimes realizing something is only for a season, helps calm our hearts and minds that it is not going to go on forever.

You will get through this too!

Do you suffer from seasonal affective disorder or SAD? I do. It’s not only during winter as some experience SAD during seasons other than winter. If you can predict when your depression hits by the changing of the seasons, you may want to look into SAD and see if you can find ways to prevent it or work through it.

If you are in a season of depression, this too shall pass! Take a deep breath and just rest on that for a moment. If you’ve suffered from depression for more than a few weeks, you need to see a professional for your health.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 says:
There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
6 a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7 a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8 a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

Do today:

    • Memorize this scripture: He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. Psalm 91:4
    • See the doctor.
    • Writing Prompt: Track your depressive episodes. Is there a common denominator that you can narrow it down to? Don’t forget to write what you are thankful for and act on it.  *If you would like a safe and free place to write, try this online journal at Penzu. It is password protected and you can even encrypt the journal if you need to. You can also use a fake name and junk email address for further protection. This way no one at home finds your personal diary entries.
    • Pray: Lord, if there is something that is adding to my depression or causing it, please reveal it to me. Give me wisdom as I seek help. In Jesus Name, Amen.

The next 31 days we will be discussing depression and healthy ways to combat it but we’re going to get real too. Because for those of us who wind up in the pit often, we know platitudes and fluff pieces do nothing for us. My expertise is only based on my own very personal battles with depression and is no way, professional or medical advice. 1. I just did this yesterday, it occurred to me that it goes in cycles and I was trying to find a pattern to it.

  2. I have read your Seasons of Depression and it just makes so much sense. And your articles or other posts are good for the heart.
