Dear Mel:
I have been praying for years for God to reveal my calling to me. So far, I’ve got nothing. I have no idea what I am supposed to be doing for him. How did you know that you were supposed to write?

Dear Wandering:
It’s hard to explain how I knew I was supposed to write. I had one night where I could not go to sleep and I lay there praying and felt this story about an instance with my Dad that I felt to the Lord leading me to share. I couldn’t ignore it, I tried, so I finally got up and wrote the story and published it and after that, I just knew that’s what I was to do. I can’t not write, or my brain would go crazy! The stories have to come out. I pray for guidance and wisdom all the time. But writing isn’t my only “calling”. Being a believer, a wife, a mother, daughter, friend etc are also callings on my life, just as those things are on yours. What kinds of things are you good at? Ask your friends and family, they have good insights. Your calling is likely a natural extension of something you’re already doing. Don’t focus on having a “calling” – we’re all called to be witnesses. God will get you where He wants you to be so there’s no need to lose sleep over it. Your calling right now may be different than what it will be in ten years from now. Pray for wisdom and trust Him to show you the way.

Mel, like me, feels the drive to write. Many others feel the same passion about advocating, singing, creating art or doing other services for our brothers and sisters. I would encourage you to read 1 Corinthians 12 and ask the Lord to show you where He wants you. It could be your gifts for serving Him are what you do everyday with love and caring. Praying for you…
