Since today is the radio show and I have been extremely ill, I am going to change up today’s Dear Mel just a little. I will post one question today and you, my readers get to offer your advice. If you have a Dear Mel question to ask, feel free to fill out the Dear Mel form. It’s totally anonymous.
Please remember to be kind in your response. Leave your advice in the comments.
Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. Galatians 6:1
Dear Mel:
Do you think it’s a sin to swear? I only seem to swear at home and I don’t use the Lord’s name in vain. Is it a sin? How do I stop doing it?
~ Potty Mouth ~
Dear Potty Mouth,
I can not answer the question of whether swearing is a sin or not, but I Can give you a little food for thought.
As christians, we are to be Christ like. Paul tells us in his writings to “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no man shall see God.” It made me wonder…what exactly IS holiness? So I did a little research on it.
The Hebrew word for holiness is Qadosh. It means to be set apart for special purposes. Paul also tells us that God has instructed that we “Come out from among them and be seperate.” (talking about unbelievers)
In MY mind, I can not put foul language as an everyday occurance for someone who is trying to be holy and Christ like. I can’t imagine Jesus walking the earth using profanity to get His message across! LOL!!!
This may be one of those personal conviction “thingies”, but that’s just my thought process. I don’t condemn anyone …judge would probly be a better word to use. I don’t judge anyone choosing to use those words, and another thought is this….this is all coming from someone who used to could make a sailor hide his face!
I LOVE reading another blog in which the author uses swear words without a second thought, and to be honest, I laugh my …rump off at the images her stories conjur up because of those words! She also has a very good point concerning why she doesn’t think it’s any big deal. So…pray about it. I’m sure He’ll let you know if it is not pleasing to Him.

Thank you Angela! Great advice. So glad someone answered. I just can’t think clearly enough to do it 🙂
oh, by the way….they still slip out of my mouth from time to time. Thank God His mercies are new every morning! If that is MY personal sin, I need them to be new every morning!!!
