It’s The Small Things

Isn’t that what we all say?  But really, it’s the big things in life that take our breath away or knock us on our behinds.  No matter what, we dust ourselves off (or change the shirt that just got puked on), humble ourselves, and get back up again.

It’s amazing to me how life has such amazing twists and turns.  I swear just yesterday, I was nursing one baby while I changed another and fought to keep track of the redheaded one, who was always into mischief of one kind or another (and still is).  Now, a few years later, I find myself trying to keep track of all four of them, each heading in their own direction and trying to make sure I listen to what they all have to say.

We’ve had our heart pounding moments in the ER, panic when someone has decided to hide from us and we think we have lost them.   Surely DCF will be knocking at our door at any moment, having caught wind that we have done the unthinkable and lost one of our children.  Thankfully those moments are rare.

(First trip to the ER, Sept 03)

What we truly enjoy and try to hold onto, are the small moments.  The impromptu water fight in the summer, the momentary eye contact where nothing is said but everything is understood in that brief second, that precious unexpected baby smile, and the precious prayers said before bedtime.

These are the things I want to savor and remember.  Time goes by so fast.  We get all too caught up in the day-to-day tasks and can miss those precious and brief moments with our families.  Take time to observe the small stuff.  Enjoy the quiet moments and if you don’t have any, make them.

If you have to cut back on extracurricular activities in order to actually see and hear your children, do it.  Soon enough they will be gone.  Do you want to remember rushing to practices or would you rather have a heart full of the little things?  What memories would you have your children remember?

I truly believe that while you are sharing those instances with your child, you are truly storing up treasures in heaven.

Matthew 6:20
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust donot destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
