It’s time for the first edition of Discussion Friday. Where I will throw out a question and you share your wisdom!

Today, we’re talking money. Eek!

Question of the day:

Should we tithe for a tax deduction? Or should we give cash anonymously?

What are your thoughts? Share them in the comments below. *Please be respectful and follow the comments policy.

  1. I’ve thought about this and haven’t come to a solid conclusion. Aren’t we to give without the other hand knowing what we are doing? I have known many attenders at church who give substantially to the church and it shows in the amount of power they seem to hold over the pastor and church body. That never seems right to me. I have started leaning toward giving in cash only and letting it be between only God and I.

  2. I believe that we can give, claim it on taxes, and therefore, improve our ability to give more. Especially if we are tithing from our tax refund as well. But I try not to notice what others are giving. As you said, it’s private between God and me.

    • Thank you for your response Hope! I agree, I think it’s totally between you and God and there are no true “rules” about giving – other than to do it joyfully because God said so 🙂 I never want to know anything about anyone else’s tithes! I think that’d be dangerous territory for sure.

  3. Great question! Miriam, that scripture you shared about the right hand and left hand is the first thing that came into my mind after reading the question. I have also considered and employ Hopes perspective.
I have researched this topic a lot, wanting to do the right thing and be obedient in this area, and being indoctrinated firmly by church leaders.
When I read this article on tithing it made the most sense to me and I have agreed with it ever since. Here it is http://www.stewardshipministries.org/blog/2012/04/27/tithes-and-offerings/

    • Dawn, that was a really good read and gave me a lot to think about. Thank you for sharing that with us. Interesting how many pastors preach and emphasize the 10% – pretty much every church I’ve ever attended. This gives me something to chew on and something to explore some more. Thank you!
