Depression: Be Thankful Then Act

Day 16 of 31 days of depression.

It’s November 1st so let’s start the month off right. I know what you are thinking, I’m going to give you the same old advice.

Yes, but with a twist.

What if you wrote down everything you were thankful for and then did something to act out your thankfulness.

Examples:

Today, I am thankful for my hands. I will use them to write some thank you notes to those important to me.

Today, I am thankful for my children. I will turn off all electronics tonight and play some board games with them.

Don’t let just being thankful for working hands and children be enough. Do something as an act of thankfulness.

I challenge you to do that every single day this month. Be thankful and act on it.

Don’t just do it but do so consciously. Be fully in the moment and aware of how thankful you are.

Do today:

    • Memorize this scripture: The Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. 2 Thessalonians 3:3
    • Writing Prompt: Write down things that you are thankful for and how you can act out that thankfulness. *If you would like a safe and free place to write, try this online journal at Penzu. It is password protected and you can even encrypt the journal if you need to. You can also use a fake name and junk email address for further protection. This way no one at home finds your personal diary entries.
    • Pray: Lord, thank you for the blessings you have given to me. Thank you for eyes that can read and a heart that loves. In Jesus Name, Amen.

  1. I started a thankful journal a few months ago. I make myself write daily and it really does help. I like your idea to take it another step. Going to try that.

    • Kelly that is a great idea. I always mean to do that and then I let it get away from me. I bet it’s awesome to look back on the things we were thankful for and what a special treasure to leave for our children.

  2. I’m thankful for my wife and kids and especially that my eldest son continues to respond favorably to chemotherapy and that mass continues to shrink. I will do something special for them today, I just need a bit more time to brainstorm. Thanks for posing this challenge!

  3. Being thankful has made a huge improvement in my outlook on just about everything. I put this to practice a few years ago now. Huge fan!
    When we read our Bibles we read that the prayers of Jesus began with thanks to the Father.
    A thankful heart is a heart that is more at peace.
